About The Qi Kitchen

Nourishing Chinese home cooking, made simple.

Some of my warmest memories are of a pot quietly simmering on the stove — a sweet soup cooling on the counter for after dinner, the smell of red dates and ginger filling the kitchen. That everyday, unhurried way of cooking is what The Qi Kitchen is about.

This site is a place to share the kind of Chinese food that gets made at home: gently sweet soups, comforting everyday dishes, and the dried-goods pantry they come from. Nothing fussy or restaurant-grade — just real, homestyle cooking, explained clearly enough that anyone can make it, wherever they live.

Why "Qi Kitchen"?

Qi (气) is one of those words that's hard to translate neatly — it carries a sense of energy, vitality, the life in things. For a kitchen, I think of it simply: food made with care, eaten with people you like, in a way that leaves you feeling good. That's the spirit I'm cooking in. No more complicated than that.

What you'll find here

  • Sweet soup recipes (tong sui) — silky snow fungus soup, chilled mung bean soup for summer, warm black sesame soup for winter. Light, spoonable, served hot or cold.
  • Everyday recipes — approachable, home-style Chinese dishes for a normal weeknight.
  • Ingredient guides — friendly, practical introductions to the dried goods and staples behind these dishes: what they are, how to choose them, and the easy ways to use them.
  • A little culture and context — the seasons, the traditions, and the small rituals behind the food, because it all tastes better when you know the story.

Who's behind it

I'm a home cook who grew up with this food and wanted to share it in plain English, for a modern kitchen — the recipes, the ingredients, and the stories, written for anyone curious enough to pick up a pot. Whether you grew up eating this or you're trying it for the very first time, you're welcome here.

The best way to follow along is to subscribe — it's free, and new recipes and guides land straight in your inbox. You can also browse the Pantry for the ingredients and tools I use and recommend.
